Pythagorean principles of rhythm, harmony and proportion have had an important influence in art and architecture. In ancient civilizations, a class of initiates had precise knowledge of these harmonic laws, and they knew how to manipulate them to create the precise effect they wanted. Evidence of this exists in the building of Gothic cathedrals -  and in the Parthenon and the Taj Mahal - with much mystery surrounding the methods used to obtain the spiritual effect the cathedrals subdue over the visitor. These methods have been mysteriously lost, but their resonance remains in the architecture they left behind.
