The Scarab is one of the most ancient of the amuletic symbols, and one of the most common in ancient history, worn as a protection amulet by the living and the dead alike.
The Scarab is a representation of the dung beetle, which lays its eggs in dung balls fashioned by rolling. The Egyptians associated this peculiar action with the divine manifestation of the rising sun and birthed the myth of Khepri, a god who propels the sun across the sky each day. Kheper, the scarab hieroglyph, came to stand for the verb "to become," "to take shape," or "to come into being."
The Scarab's relation to the rising sun has made it a symbol for renewal and rebirth, as well as an acknowledgment of the dualism of nature: day and night, dark and light, yin and yang, feminine and masculine. The very nature of the scarab is to complete the cycle: the masculine cycle being that of the 24-hour day, born anew with each rising of the morning sun. The feminine cycle being that of the 28-day moon, shedding what no longer serves with the setting of the full moon.
